From Problem to Solution:
Case Studies
At the core of successful innovation is a clear
understanding of the problem being solved. The GEC
model is built around supporting founders to identify real
market needs, develop practical solutions, and access the
infrastructure required to bring them to life.
Selio Medical is a strong example of this approach in
action. Originating from the BioInnovate programme at
the University of Galway, the company focused on
addressing a significant clinical challenge; the risk of lung
collapse during biopsy procedures, a complication
affecting a substantial proportion of patients worldwide.
As the company progressed from research to product
development, it required specialised facilities, including
R&D space and a clean room environment. The Guinness
Enterprise Centre responded by facilitating the
development of this infrastructure, supporting not only
Selio but a broader cohort of innovation-led companies.
Today, Selio Medical is approaching commercialisation,
with FDA regulatory approval secured and international
partnerships in place to support scaling.
Kato.AI was founded by language schoolteacher Mark
Kelly, driven by a clear mission: to reduce the significant
time educators spend on lesson preparation and unlock
more meaningful, engaging classroom experiences
through the power of AI.
The platform transforms how language schools
operate—streamlining preparation, enhancing lesson
quality, and enabling teachers to focus on what matters
most: student engagement and learning outcomes.
Kato.AI empowers institutions to turn their existing
teaching expertise into a scalable, competitive digital
offering that complements and strengthens traditional,
teacher-led instruction. The result is simple but powerful:
the same input, with double the output - greater efficiency
for teachers, and richer learning experiences for students.

Food Marble: Co-Founder, Aonghus Shortt, developed
a prototype device to help his wife identify which foods
suited her digestive system. This initiative stemmed from
her struggles with gut symptoms, leading to the creation
of the AIRE 1, the world’s first personal digestive breath
tester. The product is used by over 1,000 healthcare
providers across the US.
