A Global Superhub for
Ireland’s Entrepreneurs
1996
In 2019 the GEC embarked on a €11.3ml expansion project,
with support from the Enterprise Ireland REDF (Regional
Enterprise Development Fund) and ISIF (Irish Strategic
Investment Fund), to deliver a world-class entrepreneurship
incubation centre, now comprising (95,000 Sq. ft) with
space for 750 people in the heart of the historic Liberties
area of Dublin. Including state-of-the-art conference and
events facilities and business supports for Founders.
Guinness Workers Enterprise Fund (GWEF)
Established in 1956 during a period of high unemployment
in Ireland, GWEF aimed to generate employment directly
from the wages of Guinness workers.
The initiative began as a “bob-a-job” scheme, with each
worker contributing one shilling per week. These funds
were used to provide loans to entrepreneurs starting new
businesses, creating a revolving fund to support enterprise.
To mark its 40th anniversary in 1996, GWEF contributed
£150,000 to the development of the Guinness Enterprise
Centre.
1997
Establishing the Guinness Enterprise Centre
In May 1997, a Steering committee, comprising
representatives from Guinness, Dublin BIC, Dublin
Corporation, Forbairt and Dublin CEB - was formed to
progress the Centre's development.
2024
GEC re-branded
The GEC’s 2024 rebrand represents a strategic
evolution—aligning a modern identity with an expanded,
future-focused campus. It reflects our commitment to
continuously adapt and lead, delivering next-generation
supports that empower companies to scale internationally,
embrace emerging technologies, and thrive in a rapidly
changing global landscape.
Following engagement, the Dublin Enterprise & Technology
Centre Limited (DETCL) was established as the management
company for the project.
Acknowledgements
